The Bulgarian school at the church “St. Dimitar” in Brampton started its existence in 2003 with two classes: beginners and advanced level, even before the realization of the idea of the existence of a church with a parish center.
First director and teacher of the school is Mrs. Tsvetanka Nikolova. For its existence, the God-loving family Kanev granted for use free of charge the premises of Lionhead G & CC, where the school is gaining strength and was housed there until the temple building and equipment.
Since the beginning of the 2005/2006 school year, it has been part of Peel District School Board as an International Language School
Since the beginning of its existence many people have shown initiative and put in a lot of work. In the first row are the directors’ names: Yotka Richard, Vesselina Popova, Anelia Tishkova, Tsvetanka Hristoskova, Dr. H. Sc. Hristo Dimitrov.
Our school is the leading school among Bulgarian schools in Canada and distinguishes itself with a highly professional team, with individual and group training.
The organization of our work is related to various national projects, including the National program “Native Language and Culture Abroad “, a program for learning the Bulgarian language in schools abroad, initiated by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria, and in which we currently take part.
Our school enjoys high attendance of over 80 children, divided between the preschool age group and eighth grade.
Courses being taught are: Bulgarian Language, History and Geography of Bulgaria, Man and Society, Homeland, Religion, Music, Fine Arts, Dance groups and Children’s Theater group.
We distinguish with a fast, funny and progressive method of learning, consisting of performance of plays at all major Bulgarian or religious holidays, exhibitions, contests, concerts and pilgrimages.
The school is self-governing body headed by the parents’ council, approved on an annual parents’ meeting and acting with the consent and under the jurisdiction of the hosts and organizers – Trustees of the church ” St. Dimitar “Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church.
Classes are held every Sunday at 10.00 am. Currently there are three classes:
- Pre-School Group with over 20 children
- First to fourth class with 30 kids
- Fifth to eighth grade (advanced) with 20 children
Education is consistent with the curriculum of Bulgarian schools. Bulgarian textbooks are used.
At the end of the school year students receive a certificate upon completion of the correspondent class from the church board. The courses Bulgarian Language and Literature, History and Geography of Bulgaria, are recognized in all Bulgarian schools without taking further examination.
Outside of school hours, courtesy of Kanev family, students can take lessons in golf for free and learn folk dances from Dimitar Minkov, the choreographer and stage director of Bulgarian folk dance group “Dimitrovche.”
